I was increasingly indignant on the reading of Fatima Syed's article of August 28/21
The lecture, for that is how I consider same, attempts to mitigate Liberal federal cabinet minister Maryam Monsef's objectionable, and to me, offensive usage of the inclusonary, embracing term of "our brothers" in speaking of our terrorist enemy . She explains that:
" There are many cultures and communities across the Middle East and Asia that use the term brother---" "It's how we talk. We__ Arabs Afghans,South Asians and more____"
As a Canadian I expect that Canadian mores, culture ,society should be a priority to any refugee Canadian citizen, and especially to an elected politician. This is Canada not the homeland, or the other countries referred to by Syed.
Contrary to her lecturing " That we don't care to learn enough about one another's cultures, traditions and practices, is that our multiculturalism likely does more so than any other country. Surely the quoted journalist does not expect us to be knowledgeable of the multitude of varied and diverse cultures of the perhaps hundreds of differing refugee/immigrant traditions and practices? Such multi tribal baggage carried here is beyond most any to "learn", and Syed ignores that possibility in an attempt to foist blame on our lack of care. That's nonsensical in the reality of Canadian diversity. About 24 % of Canada's population is foreign-born - the highest proportion in the G8 countries.
I suggest rather that rather those coming here for citizenship learn the terms and understandings of our country and not expect the impossibility of the rest to learn the subtleties of any and all who come here, by their choice. I would point out that those referenced,Middle East,Afghani brothers are persecuting and murdering other brothers ' sisters' routinely and none, ever, for any purpose should expect us to accept terrorists as brothers. There is no excuse for her doing so other than her ignorance, NOT ours.
