The article by HASSAM MUNIR, Sat. 6th, speaks to federal audits and sanctions against Muslim charities in Canada. His concerns, and those of many Muslim Organizations and civil liberty groups, seemingly attribute some Islamophobic incidents to these federal audits.
Zakat or charitable giving to accredited Islamic charities from donors, provide appropriate tax receipts /credits and as I understand, some government funding. He refers us to a Google search for Muslim charities in Canada. In doing so I found numerous Islamic charities perhaps nearing 300.*“Registering as a charity offers organizations various financial benefits: ability to offer tax receipts to donors;tax exemptions for the organization;and eligibility to receive donations from other charities (Canada Revenue Agency, 2015) *( source, The Tessellate Institute ).
It seems to me from years of media coverage, that followers of Islam differ in ways of religion, fundamentalism, ethnicity and cultural practice.Recent history has shown that there are factions that have left Canada’s democracy to join ISIL, a terrorist group that follows a Salafi jihadist doctrine.
When I see demonstrations by Canadians in support of Palestinian controlled Hamas, on Canada’s list as a terrorist Org., I might wonder if there are some individuals that will try to support them. and other ‘charities’ that might attempt to find ways and means of funding terrorists like Hamas., ISIL or Al-Qaeda.
Canada has also accepted Muslims that have murdered their family over cultural differences and the Khadr members of al-Qaeda terror network. I might wonder too if there are not others.
Given that Canada has a list numbering in the dozens of terrorist organizations www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/ntnl-scrt/cntr-trrrsm/lstd-ntts/crrnt-lstd-ntts-en.aspx
some of which are named as Islamist, it would suggest that the CRA do it’s due diligence in accrediting a Islamic org. with a charitable registration.
The numbers of violent extremists world wide with a cause, and with those Canadians that might try to support them, it seems reasonable that the CRA and our government would want to know if the charity is legit.
If a ‘charitable org. is legit, it should welcome transparency and an audit. I think the Canadian tax payer supports a thorough investigation of all charities.
