Anyone watching? I caught some of the women's diving this afternoon, it always did impress me, however, what did catch my eye in the news was this: www.nasdaq.com/articles/olympics-athletics-as-times-shrink-shoe-debate-grows-2021-08-05TOKYO, Aug 5 (Reuters) - As athletics records continue to fall at the Olympics, adulation and incredulity at such extreme examples of human endeavour are being followed by more sober reflection as fans try to quantify the impact of carbon shoe technology and the Tokyo track.
Endurance athletes on the road have spent the last few years insisting that it is their training and dedication, not their carbon-plated, thick-soled shoes, that are the key factors in a series of amazing records, and now it is the turn of track athletes over the shorter distances.
And, as previously unimaginable chunks are ripped from marks that have stood for decades, there is even some sort of civil war between the lead protagonists arguing about whose new "performance-enhancing" shoes are the fairer.
The two 400 metres hurdles races in Tokyo this week have given the most dramatic indication that "something odd is going on."Would it not be much fairer if all runners wore the same shoes, or no shoes, and would it not then be down to actual ability rather than shoes and the track?

I guess there`s not much interest in the Olympics, but this caught my eye yesterday. The majority of articles and comments seem to be more concerned about the horse than the rider and the rules that lead to this. I don`t agree with animal abuse of course but the punch from the coach hardly made a dent, and the riding crop used by the rider should not have been used. I amconcerned about why she had to ride such a horse in the first place. They don`t have a choice of horse which is given to them 20 mins. prior to the event, but in this case, the horse had previously refused to jump for a male rider. So, why would they give her a badly behaved horse? Schleu was criticized for repeatedly using the whip in an attempt to get Saint Boy to tackle the course. The German Olympic committee called for modern pentathlon to change its approach “so that horse and rider are protected”, adding that: “The welfare of animals and fair competition conditions for the athletes must be the focus.” The coach has been removed. www.bbc.com/sport/av/olympics/58120643

I didn't watch. Don't watch much sports. Sometimes watch the final games of international hockey if my country is in it.
